COASTAL TOWNS


There is no better way to explore Montenegro than to sail along its beautiful coast. Coast line is 293 km long and beaches alone stretch over 73 km in over 117 locations. Towns are rather small but each has its story to tell.

Bar

Bar is a modern town but it also has some old historical remains like 1000 years old town Stari Bar, located about 4 km away from the seashore. It is the largest urban agglomeration in ruins in Montenegro. A special attraction of the old town is the market place (in the local language called “pjaca”), where salesmen dressed in traditional costumes offer customers domestic products, such as citrus fruits, olives, olive oil, cheese…

Bar area is well known for its olive trees which number over a hundred thousand. The oldest olive tree is over 2.000 years old. It is considered to be the oldest tree in Europe. More tourist information available on www.bar.travel.

Budva

Budva is one of the oldest urban centers in the Adriatic. It was inhabited 2.500 years ago. Fortress Citadela, which dates from 5th century B.C., Church of St. Ivan, St. Maria and St. Trinity are worth a visit. Herceg Novi

Herceg Novi was founded in the late 14th century and it is considered as one of the most attractive summer vacation spots in Montenegro. It has beautiful old town with buildings dating from 15th, 16th and 17th century. The surrounding area is excellent for sailing and two beautiful coves, Zanjic and Mirista are just a mile away. Kotor

Kotor was a city of traders and sailors which was built between 12th and 14th century. Because of its medieval architecture and historical monuments Kotor was listed as UNESCO ''World Natural and Historical Heritage Site''. We recommend you to visit Cathedral of St. Tryphon, a monument of Roman culture, Church of St. Luke, Church of St. Ana, Church of St. Mary, Prince's Palace and Napoleon's Theatre. The Kotor Bay has two small artificial islands, Our Lady of the Rock and St. George, located across from Perast, a sleepy baroque place. Churches were built on the top of those islands, and you shouldn't miss to visit them.

Ada Bojanaada is a turkish word which means island. This island is created by river delta of Bojana River. The island is triangular in shape, bordered from two sides by Bojana river and located by the sea from the south-west. It has beautiful 3 km long sandy beach, great restaurants and it is also a naturist area. Ada Bojana is one of the premier kitesurfing and windsurfing locations on the Adriatic coast, with strong cross onshore winds during summer afternoons.

Ostrog - monastery from the 17th century. It is visited by believers of all faiths because it is believed that relics of St. Vasilije of Ostrog are miraculous. It is located high in the rocky mountain. Ostrog monastery is the most famous pilgrimage site in Montenegro.

National park Lovcen with mausoleum of Petar II Petrovic Njegos, one of the greatest poets, philosophers and statesmen of Montenegro. From Lovcen mountain you can enjoy in great view of Kotor Bay, open sea, Skadar Lake and Cetinje.

National park Skadar lake - the largest lake in the Balkans, with its small fishermen’s village called Vir Pazar. Restaurants in Vir Pazar serve lake fish specialties like carps and eels.

Tara - river and the second longest canyon in the world. Tara Canyon gathers all those who like adventure and exciting contact with nature. Rafting the Tara River is an incredible experience for adventurers and nature lovers.

Biogradska Gora - national park, a part of Bjelasica Mountains. It consists of Biogradsko Lake and Biogradska Gora (the forest). Gora is one of the last three wild forest in Europe.

  • Only a year after America was discovered (1493), "Octoich" was printed in Cetinje, a masterpiece of printing, the first book ever printed on the Balkans.

  • The first acknowledged private nautical school in the world, was opened in Perast by Marko Martinovich, and on his ship seventeen Russian dukes sailed on the Adriatic Sea.

  • Ivo Vizin, navy captain from Prchanj, is the first Montenegrin mariner, and the first man from the south Slavic countries who sailed around the world between 1852 and 1859.

  • The Pope Sixtus V Peretti, one of the most famous popes of Vatican, was born in the village of Krushevice in Boka Kotorska.

  • Krsto Ivanovich from Budva, PhD of citizen and religious law in Padua, is the only foreigner buried in the church of St. Moses in Venice.

  • The Order of St. Peter is the most precious Montenegrin medal, which is practically, priceless.

  • The oldest and best preserved glass in Europe, called diareth, from the 4th century B.C., was found near Pljevlje. It has length of 14.2 cm, and width of 12.9 cm.

  • The cathedral of St. Tripun in Kotor is one of the oldest churches in Europe. It was built in 1166. It is 69 years older than Nottre Dame Cathedral, the most famous church in Paris

  • The minaret of the Hussein-pasha Boljanich mosque in Pljevlje is 42 meters tall, which makes it highest on the Balkans. One of the most beautiful copies of the Koran in Europe is kept here.

  • The church of St. Ilija, in Carina below Komovo, is built on the highest ground compared with other temples in Europe. The church is built on 1800 meters above the sea level

  • The Red Cross of Montenegro is the first organization of The Red Cross on the Balkans, and is on of the oldest national Red Cross organizations in the world. It was founded in 1875 in Cetinje.

  • Montenegro, first in Europe, introduced transportation of mail by car, instead of carriage as had been done previously. It was at the same time the first car in Montenegro.

  • The first stamp printed for a special occasion in Europe, was printed in Montenegro on the 24 July 1893.

  • The river Boyana is the only river in the world which flows in both directions.

  • In Montenegro, there are 2.833 plant species and subspecies, between them there are 22 plants that cannot be found anywhere else in the world.

  • Biograd Forest, is the only rain forest in Europe, beside Peruchica in Bosnia.

  • In the Skadar Lake live uklijeva and krap, two types of fish which cannot be found in any other place in the world.

  • The cave in the Djinovich Klisura is one of the most beautiful caves in the world. The speleologists have discovered so far 11.750 square meters of underground corridors. The cave has got several halls up to 50 meters high. A special attraction is the presence of 45 lakes.

  • Nevidio, the canyon of the river Komarnica, is the most hostile canyon in the world. The first man crossed it in 1965.

  • The river of Tara is the biggest reservoir of drinkable water in Europe and the longest river in Montenegro.

  • The only mosaic figure dedicated to the god of sleep, Hypnos, can be found in Risan.

  • In the museum of King Nikola's Court in Cetinje, two flags of Dzemaludin-Pasha are kept, which cannot be found anywhere else in the world, not even in Turkey.

  • Zhabljak is the highest town in Europe, set on 1485 meters above the sea level.

  • "St. Stefan", the only town-hotel in the world, was listed in Ripley's book "Believe it or not" as a world attraction.
